The Soul Shift That Didn’t Happen
The episode opens with the sky turning a fiery red as the alchemy of souls looks set to take place. Kil Joo conjures his powers, with energy dissolving around him and reaching toward the sky. Jang Uk appears on the verge of following, until a blindfolded Mu-deok grabs his hand and pulls him back. She is not Naksu in this moment, but the real blind girl
Jang Uk gasps awake on the ground with no blue mark on his chest, his soul has not shifted. Mu-deok frantically shakes Kil Joo’s body, believing Jang Uk’s soul is now inside him, until she looks into Jang Uk’s eyes and realizes the truth: he’s still himself. Something is different, but the shift didn’t fully take hold.
Songrim Investigates
Back at Songrim, Heo Yeom is informed that Jang Uk’s binding bracelet was found at the site where the alchemy of souls took place. While Heo Yeom fears for Uk’s safety, Park Jin is separately questioning Maidservant Kim about an incident from 20 years ago.
Park Jin pieces things together and concludes that Jang Gang did indeed perform the alchemy of souls, specifically so that Do-hwa could give birth to Jang Uk as the King’s son. His investigation is interrupted by news that the spell has returned and may have claimed a victim.
Gil Joo’s Revelations & Mu-deok’s Wound
When Gil Joo rises again, disappointed his plan has failed, he drops a bombshell: Naksu’s father, Cho Chung, was also a soul shifter, and it was he who ran wild and murdered Gil Joo’s entire family. Mu-deok (Naksu) presses him for more information, stunned by the truth about her father’s death.
Before Gil Joo can reveal who the true Danju actually is, he escapes, but not before slamming into Mu-deok’s shoulder, leaving her with a wound that turns black with poison. She flees into the woods, where Seo Yul catches up with her, notices the blood on her chest, and uses his magic to try to heal her.
The Chase to the Palace
Jang Uk follows Gil Joo, expecting him to head toward Cheonbugwan where the Danju might be hiding. Instead, Gil Joo changes course and makes for the Royal Palace, which surprises Uk. When Gil Joo tries to force his way inside, the palace guards grow suspicious and realize he is a soul shifter. He fights them and begins draining their energy, until Jang Uk intervenes once more.
Jang Uk achieves a triumphant victory over the soul shifter. As Gil Joo falls, Uk declares his intention to take the ice stone from the palace
The Ice Stone Lore
Master Lee provides a crucial explanation about the ice stone. It’s not just a background artifact, it’s essentially the philosopher’s stone of Daeho. It can restore life, stop aging, and allow soul transfers without the body rotting. Jin Mu wants it for all the wrong reasons. Jang Uk, born under the King’s Star, is directly tied to the prophecy surrounding the stone. Mu-deok overhears all of this but keeps her thoughts to herself, a sign she’s already calculating her next move.
Aftermath: Rumors of Naksu’s Return
The next day, Jin Mu is presented with Kil Joo’s dead body and told that the assassin was defeated by Tansu, a spell that was Naksu’s signature technique. Jin Mu is shocked, wondering which mage could have mastered it.
Park Jin arrives to investigate and confirms Kil Joo’s identity as a soul shifter. He notes that Jin Mu is visibly rattled, meaning he wasn’t aware of the alchemy of souls being performed either. Park Jin decides to leave things for now, simply asking to be called if help is needed. Rumors quickly spread all across Daeho that Naksu has returned.
Seo Yul & the Binding Bracelet
Seo Yul meets with Jang Uk to discuss tracing the origins of the previous night’s sorcery. They talk about the binding bracelet, and the conversation touches on Mu-deok’s condition, she had been treated for her serious injuries.
Jang Uk & Mu-deok’s Emotional Reunion
After the chaos, the two share an emotional embrace, both relieved that the threat of tragedy didn’t come to pass, and that Jang Uk’s soul remained intact.
The Queen’s True Face
The episode also reveals glimpses of the Queen’s true nature. She is shown to have a deep, personal hatred toward Songrim, a hatred connected to the war from 200 years ago. Crucially, it is hinted that she possesses the ice stone, raising major questions about who the real Danju is and what her true agenda is.
