The Soul Ejector’s Origins
The episode opens with a flashback to a historical drought that devastated Daeho. The lake dried up completely, forcing mages to pray for rain. When water finally came in the form of hailstones, one special droplet transformed through multiple states, fire, water, ice, and ultimately became the Soul Ejector. This powerful artifact could bring the dead back to life and steal the energy of the living. The founder of Songrim, Master Seo Gyeong (who was Master Lee’s teacher), eventually secured it. Now, Park Jin fears someone has released it again.
Fallout from Jinyowon
The episode picks up from the chaos at Jinyowon, where the four seasons of Daeho are summoned to discuss the missing maid. Cho-yeon had falsely accused Mu-deok of breaking the yin-and-yang jade, resulting in Mu-deok being locked in the annex. The Crown Prince, having seen the possessed Mu-deok disappear back into a mirror, is confused and unsettled, he doesn’t believe someone so bold would simply flee. He grows even more confused when Seo Yul and Dang-gu also arrive, also searching for her.
Meanwhile, Jang Uk takes responsibility for Mu-deok’s alleged wrongdoings and apologizes, while Maidservant Kim vows to find a more valuable jade for the ceremony.
The Mirror of Longing
The episode’s central magical object is the Mirror of Longing, an old Jinyowon relic locked away for good reason. It traps anyone who looks into it by feeding them illusions drawn from their deepest desires. The danger is not that it kills quickly, but that it convinces you to stay. For Mu-deok, whose deepest longing is rooted in her lost strength and identity as Naksu, the trap is especially cruel. To escape, a person must willingly reject the illusion.
Mu-deok’s trial inside the mirror forces her to choose between her past self and her present reality, making it one of the episode’s most memorable and character-driven sequences.
Mu-deok & Jang Uk’s Dynamic
After Park Jin leaves, Mu-deok steps in to caution Uk. She reminds him that his energy gates are still partially blocked and that raw power without control is useless. She is not only protecting him, she is protecting herself, since one mistake could expose her as Naksu.
Mu-deok also sets firm terms before agreeing to begin Uk’s proper training, while Uk discovers that Heo Yeom has left him a gift he must learn to claim on his own.
Gil Joo’s Scheme
Park Jin presses Maidservant Kim about whether Jang Gang performed the alchemy of souls. Meanwhile, Mu-deok tricks Gil Joo into waiting so she can verify whether he’s truly kept her secret. A sword fight breaks out, with Jang Uk defending his master against the assassin.
At the climax of the fight, the weakened Jang Uk backs out of the temple, removes his binding ring, and uses Tansu to knock Gil Joo down. But Gil Joo has one last trick, he begins to harness the alchemy of souls in a bid to perform a soul shift, and the episode ends right at this cliffhanger.
Jin Mu’s Scheming
Jin Mu receives a secret delivery and smirks at the prospect of shifting another person’s soul. The intended target, however, is unhappy, swearing he did not serve Danju just to end up in a eunuch’s body. Instead, he sets his sights on using Naksu.
Seo Yul’s Secret
Seo Yul’s decision to keep Mu-deok’s true identity secret is a notable turning point, it shifts the balance of power among the characters and hints at his deeper awareness of who she really is.
