Opening Flashback
The episode opens with a flashback of Seo Yul being shunned by Naksu at the tall tree. She brandishes her sword and vows to kill him if he ever returns. Back in the present, Yul stands in that same spot, overwhelmed by the memory, he couldn’t stop the person he cared for from leaving, nor ask her why she did what she did. “It became a secret that I had to bury within my heart,” he reflects, before turning to find Mu-deok standing behind him, asking why he’s up so early
The Tall Tree & Seo Yul’s Longing
The group gathers to look at the tall tree from which you can see all of Danhyanggok. Yul reminisces about his past love while Dang-gu marvels at the view. Mu-deok, heeding Uk’s earlier request, declines to climb the tree with Yul. Later, Yul speaks privately with Mu-deok about whether it was too cold here in winter, a subtle, emotionally loaded question. Mu-deok reads his feelings well and reassures him gently that the weather was fine. Jang Uk, watching from a distance, grows jealous again, and Dang-gu notices that Mu-deok does not look at them the same way she looks at Yul.
The Spirit Plaque & Duel Preparations
As Yul and Dang-gu prepare to leave, Jang Uk allows Dang-gu to take his father’s sword back to Maidservant Kim. There’s a discussion about the spirit plaque, the upcoming duel, and harsh words from previous teachers. Stirred up, Uk tells his friends to relay that he’s being “reckless,” then reclaims his sword under the pretense of catching a pheasant, but his real intent is to train ruthlessly. Meanwhile, Park Jin watches from afar, wishing for Uk’s spirit plaque to be tracked, while also showing quiet concern for the young man he banished from Songrim.
Master Lee Confronts the Truth
Master Lee quietly realizes that Mu-deok is no ordinary maid. He then confronts Naksu directly, asking whether her pupil understands that his next steps could lead to his death. He also warns Jang Uk about the rotten energy building inside him that could kill him, momentarily stunting Uk’s enthusiasm and making him worried about his master’s honesty. The mood is quickly lifted by a playful, flirtatious scene involving surprise poke attacks.
Jin Mu Manipulates the Crown Prince
Elsewhere, Jin Mu explains the concept of the King’s Star to the Crown Prince, stoking the royal’s fear that someone bearing such energy will emerge. He then twists the knife further, urging the Prince to eliminate Jang Uk in the duel, to “get rid of his fears while he is able to.”
The Marriage Announcement
Gossip spreads across Daeho, including to the Crown Prince, about Jang Uk’s potential marriage into the Jin family. At Jinyowon, we see Cho Yeon scheming to use the room of the missing Bu-yeon, whom her mother believes will return after a decade. Cho Yeon crafts wedding rings with a yin-yang jade said to deepen love, and exits with a distinctly villainous look. Master Lee, puzzled by the absence of pheasant at dinner, breaks the marriage news to Jang Uk, who is completely blindsided. He and Mu-deok bicker heatedly over a wedding he knew nothing about.
Dang-gu Delivers the Letter
Smitten from smelling a love fragrance, Dang-gu is tasked with delivering the marriage letter to Uk and helping craft the wedding rings. Uk, jealous, initially refuses to participate, but his reaction stings the woman who is deeply in love with him (enough that Dang-gu immediately changes his mind). Jang Uk then toys with the idea of marriage until he realizes it would end his arrangement with Mu-deok, so he lets her leave without stopping her.
Mu-deok at the Palace: A Warning from the Crown Prince
With Mu-deok now alone, she is captured by people from Cheonbugwan and brought before the Crown Prince. Due to a case of mistaken identity, she is peppered with makeup and dressed up before the royal’s arrival. The Crown Prince’s message is serious: he warns Mu-deok to tell Jang Uk not to show up to the duel, as he does not want to kill him or create enemies with Songrim or the Jang family. He wants Uk to stay hidden, marry into the Jin family, and disappear quietly, a prospect that obviously upsets Mu-deok. She refuses his offer to take her in, and exits with the Crown Prince annoyed and Jin Mu’s men very intrigued.
Seo Yul Investigates the Spirit Plaque
Seo Yul digs into the attempted sale of Songrim’s spirit plaque and confirms it was indeed Mu-deok who initially tried to sell it. He pries into her motives and appearance. When she answers that she just wants to have fun, Yul says, “I cannot understand you,” to which she simply replies that he should stay that way. Importantly, in the background, Jin Mu’s underling finally realizes that the woman he has been watching is Naksu herself.
Jang Uk Opens Up to Maidservant Kim
Jang Uk visits Maidservant Kim and, when she pushes him about the marriage, he begins hinting at his true identity and warns her not to stop him no matter what he does. When she digs deeper, Uk admits there is someone he is romantically interested in, though he doesn’t name Mu-deok. Their conversation also touches on his training injuries, which Kim recognizes as resulting from failed energy control.
Tension with Lady Jin
A tense encounter follows when Mu-deok tries to sell her silk dress and runs into Lady Jin, who is irritated by suggestions that the maid is “attached at the hip” to Jang Uk and could have won his heart. Lady Jin implies Mu-deok will soon be serving her too and attempts to burden her with a broken yin-yang jade to get her into trouble. Mu-deok almost walks away, but reconsiders when Jin Mu’s underling reappears, she accepts the jade bait specifically so she won’t be entrapped on the spot.
Cliffhanger Ending: The Mirror
Mu-deok arrives at the Jin family estate carrying the jade. The birds there react with agitation to her arrival, and she herself feels a powerful surge of energy. Cho Yeon’s mother notices in alarm. Meanwhile, Jang Uk is summoned to meet the Jin family, who confront him about the disappearance of his maid and a stolen treasure from Jinyowon. The episode closes with Mu-deok being sucked into the villainous enchanted mirror, confirming her vanishing, while a bewildered and concerned Jang Uk questions why the yin-yang jade disappeared along with her.
