Opening Flashback (Past)
The episode opens in the past with Heo Yeom visiting his master, Lee Cheol, after 100 days of meditation for Hwansu (a high-level spiritual technique). He finds the body seemingly dead and, in panic, cremates it. Unbeknownst to him, the master’s soul had temporarily left the body. It ends up shifting into the body of a young orphan boy. This accidental soul-shift explains Master Lee’s current youthful appearance and long life.
Present-Day Palace Visit
Master Lee (with Jang Uk, Seo Yul, and Park Dang-gu) visits the palace at the king’s invitation. He reveals he is a soul-shifter and can detect others. He offers to help root out soul-shifters connected to the Ice Stone. As a “gift,” he brings Gwigu, a dog that barks at soul-shifters.
The Queen (actually possessed by Shaman Choi) reacts strongly against bringing the “beast” inside, trying to block it and ordering Jin Mu to intervene. Tensions rise as Jin Mu clashes with Songrim (including Jang Uk fighting guards). Master Lee subtly warns the king about greater dangers: someone is recreating Soul Ejectors, the Ice Stone is likely with those who sent Naksu and turned a Songrim mage into a soul-shifter, and a new “King’s Star” (powerful energy like the historical Seo Gyeong) has appeared, implying Jang Uk. Master Lee leaves with Gwigu after stirring suspicions, especially toward the Queen.
Later, the Crown Prince meets Master Lee privately and mentions rumors that Naksu may still be alive via soul-shift. Master Lee requests Naksu’s sword.
Murders and Framing of Mu-deok
Parallel to palace events, So-i (with help from Jin Mu’s men) is on a killing spree, eliminating anyone who knows her face or past as the “female swindler from Sari Village.” Victims include thugs and others linked to her. Mu-deok is found near one of the crime scenes by Park Jin, who grows highly suspicious of her and believes she’s hiding a major secret.
Mu-deok investigates So-i while avoiding recognition. She asks Maidservant Kim for help proving her alibi by going to Jinyowon (to get testimony from Cho-yeon, whom she met at an inn). She briefly encounters So-i but doesn’t recognize her immediately. So-i spares her for now but grows curious.
At Jinyowon, Mu-deok interacts with the environment (including Bu-yeon’s old items), triggering subtle reactions tied to her original identity as Jin Bu-yeon. Cho-yeon’s father (not Bu-yeon’s biological dad) implants a blood worm (using Cho-yeon’s bloodline) into So-i to make her a viable fake Bu-yeon for opening relics, it’s deadly if she betrays them.
Interrogation at Songrim
Park Jin locks Jang Uk and Mu-deok in a secret room and tries to trick them into revealing secrets by lying about murders and threatening that mismatched stories will lead to Mu-deok’s death. They coordinate their responses cleverly (revealing their mutual feelings via a shared jade ornament story as cover). Cho-yeon provides an alibi for Mu-deok, and Seo Yul helps by identifying the victims as thugs linked to So-i. Park Jin releases them, though he remains wary
Romantic Confession
Outside after their release, Jang Uk and Mu-deok acknowledge their feelings for each other. Mu-deok warns him not to let love cloud life-or-death decisions, but Uk refuses to promise restraint. The episode ends on this emotional note amid rising stakes.
