Alchemy of Souls – Season 1, Episode 17

Jang Uk Meets Jang Gang (Without Realizing It)

The episode opens with the cliffhanger from Episode 16: Jang Uk confronts the scruffy stranger (his father, Jang Gang) in Gaema Village. Jang Gang recognizes his son (noting the Cheonbugwan sword) but stays disguised. He warns Uk about the dangers of sorcery, mentions that Do-hwa (Uk’s mother) was the biggest victim and the most beautiful woman in Daeho, and cautions that pursuing Shaman Choi could lead to irreversible mistakes. Uk remains unaware of the man’s true identity; they part ways.

So-i as Fake Bu-yeon at Jinyowon

So-i is presented as the returned Jin Bu-yeon. Ho-gyeong is overjoyed (though she notices subtle discrepancies, like ear shape). Mu-deok recognizes So-i as the swindler and feels odd pain in her eyes at Jinyowon. So-i realizes Mu-deok is the real Bu-yeon (due to the Jinyowon crest item and energy) and schemes to eliminate her as a threat. She lies to Ho-gyeong, claiming Mu-deok has dark energy.

Jang Uk and Mu-deok share sweet moments (including playful makeup). Uk updates her on the Crown Prince’s concerns about Jin Mu and the Queen.

Jin Mu’s Schemes Advance

Jin Mu manipulates events at the palace and Jinyowon. He convinces the Crown Prince that the Ice Stone could bring “eternity” and a new order by lifting the ban on Alchemy of Souls. He pressures Ho-gyeong to name “Bu-yeon” (So-i) as successor and turn against Songrim for absolute power over the stone. Ho-gyeong allows Jin Mu access to restricted areas.

So-i is named Danju of a secret investigation and future Jinyowon leader. The Queen (Shaman Choi) plans to soul-shift into So-i’s body once the Ice Stone’s power is accessed.

Unanimous Assembly Confrontation

A special assembly is called (without Songrim’s full input). Ho-gyeong presents the Ice Stone (which Jinyowon had hidden), accusing Songrim of deceit since it wasn’t destroyed as claimed. This strips Songrim of influence. Debate rages over control of the stone.

Jang Uk intervenes, citing Words of the Heart (a poem by Seo Gyeong) to explain the true history and dangers. Dang-gu and Cho-yeon fetch the book. Uk and Yul inform the Crown Prince that the Queen is Shaman Choi. They vow to find the real Queen.

The King suggests testing the Ice Stone by killing and reviving Mu-deok. She agrees, seeing it as a chance to seize the stone. Ho-gyeong begins choking her to death as part of the demonstration. Mu-deok experiences memories of her life as Bu-yeon and whispers “Mother,” stunning Ho-gyeong. The episode ends on this revelation and Uk’s reaction.

Other Key Developments

Yul’s Warning: Seo Yul confronts Mu-deok, confirming he knows her identity and warning her not to betray Uk.

Songrim’s Stance: Park Jin insists the Ice Stone must be destroyed. Tensions risk war between factions.

Soul-Shifter Activity: A possessed body awakens and steals energy.

Master Lee & Maidservant Kim: They anticipate Jang Gang’s return amid the chaos. Master Lee prepares a letter for him.

Themes & Setup for Next Episodes

The episode heightens the stakes around the Ice Stone, exposes Jin Mu’s web of influence, and brings Mu-deok’s true identity to the brink of full revelation. Political alliances fracture, and personal relationships (Uk/Mu-deok, Dang-gu/Cho-yeon) face immense pressure. It’s a bridge episode that pays off prior setups while launching the story into its high-tension final arcs.
